Customers don’t like shopping on Melrose anymore. Also, mayoral hopeful Karen Bass withdrew her support for Faisal Gill. Finally, NBA Young Boy is a free man – at least in LA

πŸ’§ Water Crisis Poll! πŸ’§
Residents are limited to watering their landscapes two days per week, before 9 am or after 4 pm What else should the City do to deal with the water crisis? Please let me know your thoughts! So far, 17.3% want to mandate drought-resistant landscaping, 18.2% want to recycle wastewater for irrigation, another 43.6% want to build a desalination plant at the coast, and 20.9% don’t believe residential water use contributes to the water crisis.

Here are the top stories in Los Angeles today:

  1. Will other businesses close up shop in certain LA locations? A Friday report followed a Los Angeles “business owner on Melrose (who) says crime is so bad his employees have quit, and he bought a gun.” He said that “there is no tourism” and his business is “down 40% since 2019.” Moreover, customers are afraid to come to the store and “prefer to have items delivered.” (Jeff Vaughn)
  2. Mayoral candidate Karen Bass has withdrawn her endorsement of city attorney candidate Faisal Gill. We learned on Friday that she did so because she “absolutely disagrees with Faisal Gill’s.” proposal for a 100-day moratorium on misdemeanor criminal filings.” In November, Gill will have a runoff election against Hydee Feldstein Soto. (KFI)
  3. A jury unanimously found 22-year-old rapper NBA Young Boy “not guilty at his felony gun trial in federal court in Los Angeles on Friday.” He had argued that “he didn’t know the gun was in the car and had no intent to possess it.” The jury also refused to go along with the prosecution, which argued that he “showed his guilt when he fled his surprise arrest and hid in a backyard.” (Rolling Stone)
  4. The Saints Volodymyr Ukrainian Orthodox Church at 4051 Melrose Avenue is stepping up and collecting donations and supplies for Ukrainian refugees. In addition, “volunteers working daily have gathered more than 8,000 waterproof first aid kits for Ukrainian first respondersdefenders and victims to use.” (Patch)
  5. Mark your calendars! Summer Night Lights are back! “Every young Angeleno deserves a place in their community where they feel safe to spend quality time with their friends and loved ones,” said Mayor Eric Garcetti. The program runs through September 2 at locations including 109th Rec and Imperial Courts at 2250 East 114th St. (Mayor’s Fund for Los Angeles, 2)
