The Gary Drug Free Coalition in partnership with the Gary Community School Corporation (GCSC) is providing a “Safe Summer” series during the school corporation’s summer enrichment / summer school program.
Resources from local organizations including Edgewater and Community Advocates of Northern Indiana are participating by speaking on topics related to living a healthy lifestyle with an emphasis on drug and violence prevention.
Throughout the month of June, GCSC elementary school students learned about nutrition and healthy food alternatives through a partnership forged with Purdue Northwest Extension.
“The community partners that the Gary Drug Free Coalition has brought to the table has resulted in students being engaged and excited about making healthy and wise choices,” said Denise Dillard of the WDS Group. “We started with a full-day seminar with high school students before the close of the school year, and recognized that the conversation on drug prevention needed to start earlier. The Safe Summer is a great catalyst for this dialogue with more programming to follow throughout the school year. ”
Regular programming will begin in the fall to all students in the Gary Community School Corporation. Organizations serving Northwest Indiana in the areas of mental, physical health are encouraged to partner.
