New Delhi: Longevity, despite being a concept that talks about a healthy lifestyle and the right choices, is influenced by the smallest things in life such as what foods one eats, body weight and basic choices like abstinence from smoking and alcohol intake. Even the snacks that one enjoys as a mid-meal treat could affect longevity – and as it turns out, there is a particular fruit that could add years to life. It is grapes – available in green, red and black shades – and according to a study that recently got published by the Foods journal, adding a specific quantity of this fruit to the daily diet could work wonders for health.

How do grapes contribute to longevity?

In the study, experts revealed that adding two cups of grapes to the daily diet – particularly a high-fat diet – could help lower the risk of fatty liver and its complications while also raising antioxidant genes to increase lifespan. Although the subjects for this study were mice instead of humans, researchers estimated that a person could enjoy a four to five additional years of life if they start eating grapes regularly. They also said that it is more reason to include a variety of foods in the diet.

But how do grapes contribute to this impressive feat? It is the antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties of grapes that make it a healthy choice. Rich in catechins, resveratrol, quercetin, and anthocyanins, grapes along with a balanced diet can help reduce oxidative stress, fight free radicals and produce anti-inflammatory results.
