To make keto peanut butter, you only need one ingredient: raw or roasted unsalted peanuts. This means that the peanut butter is free of any added sugars, preservatives, or other unnecessary ingredients commonly found in store-bought peanut butter or flavored peanut butters.

  • peanuts – use roasted peanuts so that you don’t have to roast the peanuts at home. I chose to use unsalted peanuts, but you can use salted peanuts as well. Just keep in mind that some peanuts can be very salty.

Making keto peanut butter is a very simple process.

However, before you make your peanut butter you need to make sure that your food processor is clean and COMPLETELY DRY. If water gets into the peanut butter while you are making it, the peanuts will seize. So be sure it is completely dry.

nuts in a food processor

First, place the roasted peanuts in a high-powered food processor or blender.

processed and blended peanuts in mixing bowl

Process the peanuts for about 2-3 minutes, open the lid, and scrape down the sides of the processor/blender if needed. The peanut butter will be chunky still.

Close the lid and process for another 2-3 minutes or until it is completely smooth and creamy.

Once the peanut butter is smooth and creamy, transfer it to an airtight container and store it in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 weeks.

If the keto peanut butter is too thick for your preference at this point process it for a few more minutes to thin it more.

Alternatively, you can also add a splash of healthy fats like olive or avocado oil to thin it out.

Hint: sweeteners, salt, or flavors should not be added to the food processor while making the peanut butter to ensure the peanuts do not seize. If you want to flavor your peanut butter it must be mixed in after the peanut butter is smooth.

If you are not a fan of peanut butter, or you have a peanut allergy, you may be wondering what substitutions you can make for keto peanut butter. Fortunately, there are several options that you can choose from that are just as delicious and nutritious.

  • Almond Butter – this is one of my favorite nut butters. It’s easy to make, just use roasted almonds and follow the same directions.
  • Sunflower Seed Butter – roasted and shelled sunflower seeds can be used to make sunflower butter.
  • Macadamia Nut Butter – follow the same directions just use roasted macadamia nuts.
  • Cashew Butter – use pre-roasted cashews and process as if using peanuts.

Almond butter, sunflower seed butter, cashew butter, and macadamia nut butter are all delicious and nutritious options that are perfect for a low-carb, high-fat diet.

Keto peanut butter is delicious on its own, but you can easily customize the flavor by adding different ingredients. Additions should only be mixed into the peanut butter after it has been processed in the food processor and is smooth. Here are five flavor variations for keto peanut butter that you can try:

  • Chocolate peanut butterr – Add unsweetened cocoa powder and a low-carb sweetener to your peanut butter. This will give it a rich and decadent chocolate flavor.
  • Cinnamon peanut butter – Mix ground cinnamon into your peanut butter for a warm flavor.
  • Vanilla peanut butter – Add a drop or two of pure vanilla extract to your peanut butter for a subtle and sweet flavor.
  • Maple peanut butter – Mix in a small amount of sugar-free maple syrup.
  • Spicy peanut butter – Add a pinch of cayenne pepper or chili powder to your peanut butter for a bold and spicy flavor.

Making keto peanut butter is a simple process that requires very few tools and equipment. Here are the basic items you will need to make your own keto peanut butter:

  • Food processor or high-speed blender: The most important piece of equipment you will need to make keto peanut butter is a food processor or high-speed blender.

  • Spatula or spoon: A spatula or spoon will be needed to scrape the sides of the food processor or blender to ensure that all the ingredients are well incorporated.

Proper storage is key to keeping your keto peanut butter fresh and delicious for as long as possible. Here are some tips on how to store your keto peanut butter:

  • Store in an airtight container: After making your keto peanut butter, transfer it to an airtight container like a jar or food storage container with a lid. This will help prevent air and moisture from getting in and spoiling the peanut butter.
  • Refrigerate: Homemade peanut butter must be refrigerated to extend its shelf life. The cool temperature will help to keep it fresh and prevent it from going rancid. You can keep your peanut butter in the fridge for up to several weeks. On the counter, it will spoil much faster.
  • Freeze: Yes, you can freeze peanut butter. If you have made a large batch of keto peanut butter and don’t plan to use it up within a few weeks, you can freeze it for longer storage. Transfer the peanut butter to a freezer-safe container or zip-top bag and store it in the freezer. Frozen peanut butter can last for several months.
  • Stir before use: Over time, the oil in your peanut butter may separate and rise to the top of the container. Before using your peanut butter, be sure to give it a good stir to re-incorporate the oil. Since there is no added oil in this peanut butter, the oil does not separate as much as natural store-bought peanut butter.

By following these storage tips, you can keep your keto peanut butter fresh and delicious for as long as possible. Enjoy your peanut butter on its own or use it as a tasty and healthy ingredient in your favorite recipes.

Top tip

Make sure the peanuts completely cover the blade of your food processor. I used 3 cups of peanuts, but if you have a larger food processor you may need to use more peanuts to cover the blade. If you don’t have enough peanuts then your peanut butter may not turn out smooth.
