HCA Healthcare has entered into a wide-ranging collaboration with Johnson & Johnson, the for-profit hospital chain announced Tuesday.

The for-profit health system and the drug, medical device and consumer products company will begin their partnership with a focus on three areas: developing a pilot project to support early detection of lung cancer in Black patients; nurse education and training by HCA Healthcare and its affiliated Galen College of Nursing; and studying how digital technology can improve care for patients with cardiovascular diseases. The companies did not disclose the financial terms of the arrangement.

“We are excited to collaborate to advance health equity, enhance patient care and provide even greater support to our nurses,” HCA Healthcare CEO Sam Hazen said in a news release.

HCA Healthcare operates 182 hospitals and approximately 2,300 ambulatory sites. During the second quarter, the Nashville, Tennessee-based health system recorded a 2.7% revenue increase to $14.82 billion and a 20% decline in net income to $1.16 billion.

Johnson & Johnson is restructuring and plans to spin off its consumer health business into a standalone publicly traded company as it focuses on pharmaceuticals and medical devices. Johnson & Johnson expects to complete the separation by late next year.
