In Windows 10, setting up a new default browser was easy enough. If you install a new browser, such as Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox, the app will prompt you to set it as default and open the Settings app where you can do so with a few clicks. First, Disable S Mode (If On)
Some Windows devices ship in what Microsoft calls S Mode. This is a very closed version of Windows where you can just install apps through the Microsoft Store, without the use of line tools, and Microsoft tools like Edge and Bing are not static, which is the only way.
Microsoft advertises this as safer and more stable than others, and is technically accurate. Malware you download online may not work this way, for example. But it is very slow, and if you want to change your browser, you have to turn it off. You can do this by going to the Microsoft Store and searching for “S Mode,” where you will find a list that can help you.
Unfortunately, you can’t turn on S Mode, so make sure this is what you want to do. S Mode is ideal if you want to use your computer or tablet in locked mode, like the iPhone. But if you want to upgrade your default browser or install more software, you need to leave S Sode fine.
Next, Set Up Your Access Browser
Now it gets a little weird. In the past, there was one way to change the default browser. But under the hood, this means opening several types of files or links. If you have ever had a PDF file opened in Edge instead of Chrome, for example, you have seen how the default browser can be different depending on the type of file you are trying to open.
Initially, Microsoft made it possible for you to place each type of file individually, so your custom browser settings include several steps. After the recent update, however, Windows 11 has a button to set up a standard one of the http, https, htm, and html links.
However, not all file types can be opened in the browser, if you also want to ensure that, for example, PDFs are opened in your favorite browser, you need to edit them manually.
