Duluth woman shares experience with heart health at Go Red for Women event

DULUTH, MN– On Wednesday, a Duluth woman known for her athletic achievements and healthy lifestyle shared her story to inspire others and encourage them to recognize signs of heart health.

Karen Stromme spoke during Wednesday’s American Heart Association “Go Red for Women” Lunch.

The basketball hall-of-famer olympian and now UMD athletic department leader suffered a heart attack just over a year ago.

A major surprise for someone who considered herself extremely healthy.

She told her story of survival hoping to help other women recognize the signs and symptoms of heart disease.

“Lightheaded, I threw up, I was tired, I was sweaty. some of the things that they do not present the same way as they do in a man. I think that’s why this lunch is so important for women because we don’t have the same symptoms as you have a pain and your arm is going numb, ”she said.
